Background of the Study

Work satisfaction among healthcare professionals, particularly pediatric nurses, is a key determinant of the quality of patient care. Pediatric nurses are essential in providing direct care and emotional support to children and their families in clinical settings. The satisfaction of nurses in their roles can significantly influence not only their personal job performance but also the overall quality of care they provide to their patients (Aluko et al., 2024). In Sokoto State, a region that faces challenges such as limited healthcare resources, high patient loads, and low staffing levels, understanding the relationship between pediatric nurses' work satisfaction and the quality of patient care is particularly relevant.

Studies have shown that when healthcare workers are satisfied with their work, they tend to provide higher quality care, leading to better patient outcomes (Yusuf et al., 2023). Conversely, work dissatisfaction can result in burnout, increased turnover, and diminished quality of care, which may negatively affect patient outcomes, particularly in pediatric settings where specialized care is crucial for children's health and well-being (Ibrahim & Abdullahi, 2023). Factors such as workplace environment, support from colleagues and management, career advancement opportunities, and remuneration can all influence nurses' work satisfaction. Additionally, patient care quality in pediatric settings can be assessed by factors like safety, emotional support, communication, and the adequacy of medical interventions.

In Sokoto State, where pediatric healthcare facilities may experience challenges related to staff motivation, resources, and training, examining how work satisfaction impacts patient care quality could provide valuable insights for improving healthcare delivery in the region. This study aims to explore the correlation between pediatric nurses' work satisfaction and the quality of care they provide to their pediatric patients.

Statement of the Problem

In Sokoto State, the pediatric healthcare system faces numerous challenges, including staffing shortages, resource constraints, and high patient volumes. These factors may affect pediatric nurses' work satisfaction, which in turn could impact the quality of care provided to children. Despite the growing body of research on healthcare workers' job satisfaction and its influence on patient care quality, there is a lack of specific studies in Sokoto State that explore the correlation between pediatric nurses' satisfaction and the quality of pediatric care. Addressing this gap in knowledge is crucial for developing strategies to improve both nurse satisfaction and the quality of pediatric healthcare in the region.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the correlation between pediatric nurses' work satisfaction and the quality of patient care in Sokoto State.

  2. To identify factors contributing to pediatric nurses' work satisfaction in Sokoto State.

  3. To assess the impact of nurses' work satisfaction on specific aspects of pediatric patient care, including safety, communication, and emotional support.

Research Questions

  1. What is the correlation between pediatric nurses' work satisfaction and the quality of patient care in Sokoto State?

  2. What factors influence pediatric nurses' work satisfaction in Sokoto State?

  3. How does pediatric nurses' work satisfaction affect the quality of pediatric patient care in terms of safety, communication, and emotional support?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is a significant positive correlation between pediatric nurses' work satisfaction and the quality of patient care in Sokoto State.

  2. Factors such as workplace environment, support from management, and career opportunities significantly influence pediatric nurses' work satisfaction.

  3. Higher work satisfaction among pediatric nurses is associated with improved quality of pediatric patient care, particularly in areas such as safety and communication.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on pediatric nurses working in healthcare facilities across Sokoto State. Data will be collected through surveys and interviews to assess nurses' work satisfaction and the perceived quality of patient care. Limitations include the possibility of subjective bias in self-reported data, variations in nurse training and experience, and differences in healthcare facility resources.

Definitions of Terms

  • Work Satisfaction: The level of contentment and fulfillment that pediatric nurses feel regarding their job, including factors such as pay, working conditions, and professional support.

  • Patient Care Quality: The overall standard of care provided to pediatric patients, which includes safety, treatment effectiveness, communication, and emotional support.

  • Burnout: A state of physical and emotional exhaustion caused by prolonged stress at work, which can lead to decreased job satisfaction and compromised patient care.

  • Pediatric Nurses: Registered nurses who specialize in the care of children, including those in hospital and outpatient settings.
